How POS Software Works

The first Point of Sale (POS) software was introduced by IBM in 1973. The IBM 3650 and 3660 POS software systems were first installed in Pathmark Stores in New Jersey and Dillard’s Department Stores. Over 30 years later, POS needs have become so wide and varied that there are many different POS software programs tailored to suit the specific needs of different industries.

POS software integrates the physical devices in POS hardware systems with computer language to facilitate automated data processing and money counting. POS software monitors almost all day-to-day activities of any business. It helps them to run systematically by keeping track of income and expenditures, inventory, stock, and clearance, billing, customer, and transaction records and customer service by using cash drawers, thermal printers, barcode scanners and receipt printers.

POS software enables speedy business transactions and accurate budgeting to aid vendors to increase their profits significantly. POS software also helps in paging systems in hotels and restaurants, taking online food orders and delivery of food items.

The most popular of industries that POS software helps are restaurants and retail stores. POS software for each of these industries has unique features that automate sales and customer transactions and ensure staff accountability. POS software for restaurants could include restaurant paging that would let customers know when their tables were ready to be sat at, help compute each diner’s order and compute the sale, etc. Retail stores can use cash registers with cash drawers to speed up each transaction at the point of sale. The more efficiently a customer’s experience is at a store, the more likely they are to come back.

Vendors will usually try out different POS software before deciding on the best POS software for their industry. Some basic cash register parts include computers, receipt printers, barcode scanners, Barcode printing software, thermal printers, pole displays and money counters. In addition, inventory POS software is essential for any business that uses a point of sale system.
